Alright so besides Chromecast are there any devices that I could use to stream things from my laptop to my TV?
I'm thinking like a wireless HDMI connection, that's what I want. Am I just really behind on tech or is this not a thing?

I second the Wireless HDMI. They may be expensive but they are awesome.

Look up Miracast.

I'd recommend just getting a long HDMI cable from Monoprice. A 50 footer only costs about 40 bucks.

Why specifically not a chromecast? Regardless, if that's what you want, get a long HDMI cable, there's a lot of lag with wireless.

I did that with my old laptop bc it didn't have hdmi or anything like that.

Build an el-cheapo HTPC and run XBMC then just stream stuff over the network (Note: This leads down the patch of eventually getting a NAS which is probably what you really want anyway). Unless you're talking mid-highly graphically intensive games...then you'll want to plug the laptop in directly and get a wireless keyboard/mouse setup. Depending on range a normal desktop set may work or you may have to step up to ones designed for business conference rooms.

Honestly, I just want to run XBMC on my TV from my bed.

I run a (couple generations old) shuttle micro PC I put together just for that.
This looks to be the current equivalent (except it has a DVD drive which I do not):

Just grab whatever laptop processor/memory/SSD is on sale, toss on the Linux distro your comfortable with, and XBMC it up.

Any real reason why you are against the Chromecast? I have three of them and they are honestly the best, especially for the price.

I've got nothing against it but I wanted to know what else is available.
Can you mirror your desktop on your tv? That's the main function I'm looking for.

Just get a wireless keyboard/mouse and an hdmi cable, they work fine from 10-15 feet away if there's a clear part to the receiver, a usb extension chord works great.

you could run xbmc on a raspberry pi http://kodi.tv/download/

Ohh ok I see. As far as I know you can only cast Chrome tabs on it as well as apps like Youtube, Netlfix, Hulu, etx....
I think your best bet for that would just be a long HDMI cord.

I can cast my cellphone screen directly to my TV with Chromecast its actually pretty neat.

I'm building a massive home network right now at my house.
I have a raspberry pi B+ that is set up right now running XBMC/KODI and it works pretty great. They cost about 35 bucks. I have a second one coming in the mail this week too haha. I'm getting this sweet Logitech wireless keyboard with a built in track pad.
This setup won't wirelessly connect your laptop to the TV, but it gives me the ability to access all my files in my home network on screen. The Pi is basically a mini computer. I'm hooking up a 4TB hard drive with usb 3.0 straight to my router so I'm gonna have full speed streaming around the house.
Should be sweet when I finish up. let me know if you have questions.
